CHAPTER EIGHT

Daniel stepped into the mansion. Ryunosuke rushed across the entrance hall toward him. At the sight of Ryu, a jolt of hurt and pain so deep passed through Daniel that it took all his concentration to remain standing.

Ryunosuke flung his arms around him in a tight embrace. “Where’ve you been? I’ve been calling your phone, you didn’t leave a note. We’ve all been trying to get hold of you.” He drew back, his gaze moving over Daniel’s face. “What’s wrong?”

Daniel stared at him. Ryu…why had he lied to him? Or if not so much lied, didn’t tell him his true intentions for wanting to return to Japan. How could he do this to him? After last night and all they’d said to each other?

Ryunosuke laid his hand gently on Daniel’s cheek. “Daniel, what is it? What happened?”

“I went to see Li Kang.” The words fell out of his mouth without a thought, as if they needed to be said too badly for him to remain silent.

Shock flashed over Ryunosuke’s face, but only for an instant before anger rose in his gaze. “What?!”

Two sets of footsteps descended on the stairs, Titus and Andreas. They paused, watching, listening, but keeping their distance. Daniel brought his attention back to Ryunosuke. “I had to. I wanted to tell him to put aside your issues, to—”

“How could you do that?!” Ryunosuke backed up a step from him. “I told you how dangerous he is. That I didn’t want you anywhere near him. Then you went to him behind my back? I can’t believe you’d do something like that.”

Daniel shifted forward, closer to Ryunosuke. “Well, I couldn’t very well tell you where I was going, now could I? Besides, you were sleeping. You had a horrible day yesterday and it was better for you to rest.”

“And he was the cause of it! I can’t…” Ryunosuke shook his head, seeming lost for words, too hurt and angry to say anything. He turned away from Daniel, walking a few strides from him. “He could’ve killed you. How many times do I have to tell you that? How many times do I have to tell you how dangerous he is?”

Anger started to grow within Daniel. He marched toward Ryunosuke. “None. You don’t need to tell me any more times. But you could do with telling me some new things. Like the truth.”

Ryunosuke spun toward him. “What’re you talking about? There’s nothing I’ve never been anything but honest with you about.”

“No? Did you know the lord you killed was so important to him? That the man was helping him to start a new life?”

“No, I didn’t. But—”

“Would it have mattered if you had known?”

Confusion drew Ryunosuke’s slender eyebrows together. “Maybe. I don’t know. How can I answer a question like that?”

“What of the other men you killed that day? How many were there?”

“I don’t…five, I think, including his lord. I spared those who asked for it. But I’m not sure. I—”

“You’re not sure? How can you not be sure how many you killed that day?”

“Because I’ve taken a lot of lives!” Ryunosuke snapped back.
